An incredible Victorian Egyptian Revival winged scarab brooch dating from the 1880s. It's expertly crafted, and set with an array of coloured gemstones, including emerald, ruby, and turquoise, as well as rose cut diamonds. The scarab was highly symbolic to the ancient Egyptians, representing rebirth and renewal. They believed the sun was rolled across the sky each day by a giant (the god Khepri), and indeed, this scarab is holding a turquoise-set sun disk between its two front legs.
